Food is your medicine. This may be a bold statement, but makes sense when we rethink the place of food in our lives. We are what we eat! This is true in every way. The body is constantly changing within, particularly at the molecular level. It must receive the correct “stuff” in order to maintain and replenish itself on a moment to moment basis.
Where might these substances come from? The answer is- our food! Our body can only produce a small fraction of the proteins, vitamins and other components that it needs to sustain itself. Luckily, nature thought of this and graciously provided us with a humongous range of edible objects to enjoy. They come in many forms.
All of the macronutrients (protein, fat, carbohydrates) and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals) that the body requires are found in “whole” foods. A “whole” food is any food that does not come in a box or package and has undergone minimal (if any) processing. While sadly this does not include “Twinkies” or “Big Macs,” it leaves a unimaginably long list of food to choose from. To name a few, these foods include those in the categories of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, meat, eggs, dairy-products, beans and nuts.
